Lia Aspen ~ clinical herbalist, space weaver, naturalist, and mother with Boricua and Ukranian roots

Lia was introduced to Chinese Medicine as a teen, which led her to seek out forms of traditional medicine later on in life. In 2020, she began formal study with ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism, and soon after apprenticed with herbalist Christopher Rogers in Brooklyn, NY. She went on to complete her clinical training and advanced mentorship with Land of Verse, under Laura Ash and Kelsey Barrett. She co-founded Rooted Herbal Collective, an initiative to bring accessible herbal support, education, and skill-building to Long Beach, CA. In 2023, Lia founded The Way Out There to transform the relationships we have to ourselves and the planet. She has been offering public workshops, classes, and 1-on-1 client support since 2022. Lia’s devotion to the vast mycelia that is plant life and herbalism has taken her down many roads, studying austere and herbal first aid, Caribbean and earth-based healing traditions, field botany and California ecosystems, and now the maiden-to-mother threshold. Her work is evidence-based, existing at the confluence of science and tradition, placing the individual as the authority of their own healing, and rooted in reverence for the natural world.

my story

My path began as a seed in my childhood, sung to me through the sounds of my mother brewing ginger tea on the stove when I had a cold and my little feet hitting the ground as I ran alongside the ocean. It was a simple and innate curiosity for the world around me, and a safety I found hidden beneath the conifers that grew adjacent to my home.

As a teen and into my early 20s, I experienced chronic stress, severe menstrual pain, and gut issues, which highlighted my desire for sanctuary in not only the isolation and hurt I faced, but the residual complexity, fear, and dissociation that came with it. I wanted peace, somewhere I could finally take a deep breath, and answers. Plant medicine and earth-based ceremony greatly altered my experience of life. It is from this place that I weave ritual, elemental connection, and my ancestral roots into my daily life and practice here.

When I was initiated into motherhood, I was sick my entire pregnancy with Hyperemesis gravidarum. I was overcome by the constant GI discomfort, the struggling to eat the “right” foods, the guilt, the sadness, and grief of not functioning in the way I always knew how. I felt like a stranger to myself as I morphed through those months. I navigated many practitioners as I searched for a way to support myself. And, at the time, I had wished for more community around it. Working with plants is and has been a well of hope and support leading into greater trust of myself and body.

What I bring forth now is a culmination of all of my lived experiences and studies, a bridge between worlds, an ode to the magic of woman and earth.

I’m currently based out of the Morongo Basin, California, offering 1:1 herbal consultations, support for new mothers, herbal medicine-making workshops, and private gatherings.
